What is family? By Odilia Rivera-Santos

As adults, we create our own families and recreate the definition of family

What is a family?
A family is a group of people who get excited when you succeed and find ways to celebrate each achievement.
A family is a group of people who helps you when you falter, without judgement or criticism.
A family is a group of people who travel the long journey of life together and continue to care for one another through good times and bad, forming a net to catch you.
A family loves you despite your imperfections, neurotic tendencies and being different from whatever the norm might be.
A family is a group of people who listen to your plans, dreams and apprehensions with a focus on helping you become more confident in your abilities.
A family is a group of people whose lives are intertwined, not to engage in idle gossip, but to explore ways to be gentle,
Kind and of service to one another.

If your family of origin doesn't provide the compassion, love and support you need, improvise.
Make your family as you travel through experiences. And never be ashamed to admit you need a family/community to celebrate your successes, without jealousy or a sense of competition. And you need a family to keep you company, celebrate birthdays, achievements and holidays and to love you and accept you as you are -- anything less would not be a family..
